Do you need a visa to enter Iran?
Visa Requirement: If your passport isn’t from a country with a visa waiver agreement with Iran, you’ll need a visa to enter Iran with an ordinary passport or travel document.
Visa-Free Entry: Even if your passport allows visa-free entry, check the maximum duration you can stay without a visa. If you plan to stay longer, you’ll need to obtain a visa.
Visa on Arrival: Many nationalities have the option to get their visas upon arrival at selected international airports. However, this approach can be risky if you don’t secure the visa before your trip, as you might not be granted a visa and could face deportation. Also, Airlines often require a visa or visa approval (known as Visa Grant Notice) before boarding a flight to Iran. IranianVisa.com can assist you in obtaining this online visa approval.
Land or Sea Entry: If you intend to enter Iran by land or sea, you must obtain a visa before your trip, even if you qualify for a visa on arrival. This also applies if you’re arriving at airports which don’t have a visa office. Visas in such cases must be obtained from an Iranian consulate before you travel to Iran.
Not Eligible for Visa on Arrival: Travelers with passports from countries not eligible for Iran’s visa on arrival, or those with refugee travel documents from any country, must get their visas from an Iranian consulate or embassy before their trip.
US, UK, and Canadian Passports: Travelers with these passports may face restrictions, like requiring a tour guide and a pre-arranged itinerary. The visa process for these nationalities can be more complex and time-consuming. We will arrange the needed support for such visas.
Dual Nationals: Iranian nationals with dual nationality cannot obtain an Iranian visa; they must use their Iranian passport to enter Iran. The offspring of Iranian male nationals are also considered Iranian under Iranian law, even if they’ve never held an Iranian passport. Iranian expats who’ve officially renounced their Iranian nationality can apply for an Iranian visa using their current foreign passport.
Israeli Passports: Iranian visas are not issued to holders of Israeli passports.
Understanding these visa requirements and options can help you plan your visit to Iran more effectively.
Iran Visa Waiver
Here is an updated list of nationalities that can visit Iran without a visa for the mentioned durations (as of Sep. 2023):
When to Apply for Iran Visa?
When to apply for an Iran Visa depends on your nationality, intended entry method, and your planned travel dates. Here’s a breakdown of the application timeline:
Visa Validity: Iran tourist visas are typically valid for 3 months from the date of issue.
Visa Approval Validity: If you receive a visa approval (visa grant notice), it is usually valid for 2 months from the date of issue. During this period, you can collect your visa from an Iranian consulate or upon arrival, as per your preference.
Processing Time: The visa application process usually takes 3-10 working days for most nationalities. However, for passport holders from the USA, Canada, and the UK, the process may take longer, up to 12 weeks.
Given these considerations, here’s a suggested timeline for applying for an Iran Visa:
Collecting Visa from Consulate: If you plan to collect your visa from an Iranian consulate, you can apply for a visa grant notice as early as 5 months before your intended entry date. This allows ample time for processing and collection without the risk of your visa expiring. Bear in mind that you shall not collect the visa earlier than 3 months prior to your planned entry and later than 2 months after issue of the visa grant notice.
Collecting Visa on Arrival: If you intend to collect your visa on arrival at an Iranian airport, you can apply for a visa grant notice as early as 2 months before your intended entry date.
For travelers from the USA, Canada, and the UK, due to the longer processing times, it’s advisable to start the application process as early as possible, within 6 months prior to your intended entry date.
By following this timeline, you can ensure that your Iran Visa or visa approval remains valid and ready for your travel plans. Keep in mind that visa policies and processing times may vary, so it’s always a good practice to double-check with the relevant authorities or your chosen visa service provider for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
What type of Iran Visa?
Depending on your passport type and purpose of travel to Iran, you can select one of the following visa types for travelling to Iran. Tourist visas are usually good for most of these travel purposes.
How to Apply?
You may select to apply for an Iranian visa through any of the 3 routes below:
Direct Visa Applications
Sometimes you can directly refer to an Iranian consulate for a visa application. However, most consulates request a visa approval (or visa grant notice) issued by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) before issuing the visa. You can get this visa approval through an authorized travel agency like iranianvisa.com, or the MFA’s online visa portal.
If you are eligible for Iran visa on arrival, you may want to fly to Iran and wait at the airport while your visa application is being processed. However, there is always a risk of visa refusal and deportation when you don’t have a visa approval. That’s why most airlines don’t let you board a flight to Iran without a visa or visa approval.
Through Goverment eVisa Portal
In 2017, The Iranian government launched a website for accepting and processing visa applications online. The outcome of the applications on this system are visa approvals (visa grant notice). Applicants then need to take this document to an Iranian consulate or airport to collect their visas.
This system’s visa refusal rate was relatively high and many applicants had to refer to a travel agency for getting visa after receiving a refusal or waiting long times with no answer on this system.
This system has not been responsive since 2020 and there have been reports of long fruitless waiting times by applicants.
Through IranianVisa.com
With a small fee, you can leave the application process to an authorized Iranian travel agency like IranianVisa.com that sponsors your visa application and submits the application to the MFA on your behalf as per the required standards. Application Process
According to the regulations of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a Tourist visa is issued for foreign nationals who are interested to travel to Iran individually or with a group for the purpose of visiting Iran, or their friends and relatives.
This visa is issued for a maximum stay of 30 days with the option of extensions in Iran. The visa remains valid for a period of 3 months from the date of issue. Depending on your nationality and the consulate which you refer to, it is possible to submit your documents and receive a visa after some days without any reference from Iran or apply through the new e-visa system. But it can be a time-consuming or even fruitless attempt, specially when you are applying out of your country.
Most consulates need an authorization letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran. Getting this authorization is the most important step in visa application process. There is not much left when you have this code. You will usually have your visa in 1 or 2 days, after having the visa code.
You may also apply for an Entry (Business) visa, which needs an invitation letter form your Iranian host, but keep in mind that traveling only with a tourist visa enables you to enjoy special tourist rates with hotels and etc.
Step 1 : Apply
Filling the form
There will be a formal application extracted from your submitted data to be sent to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs which authorizes the consulate for visa issue. Be sure that the details have been entered correct, since they must match your passport info and the documents which will be submitted later to the consulate for collecting the visa.
Step 2 : Payment
Payment of the service fee
You will receive the service bill and the payment instructions after the submission of the application. This charge is different from the visa fee which you must pay to the consulate for stamping your passport (step 4).
Step 3 : Receive
Receiving the visa code
The output will be an authorization letter which will be transmitted to the Iranian Consulate which you have indicated in the form. You will receive the visa code and a visa grant notice document with which you will be able to collect your visa. This code is only valid to the mentioned consulate and only for a month from the date of issue. You may request us to forward it to another consulate with an extra charge.
Step 4 : Collect
Collecting the Visa
Having the reference code, you will refer to the consulate with your passport (which must be valid for the next 6 months), the completed visa application form (which can be picked from the consulate or be downloaded from their website), 2 new passport size photos (may not be needed sometimes), the visa fee (which depends on your nationality) and the authorization reference code, (Always check the needed documents with the consulate, as there may be differences from one consulate to another.) You may also be able to send the documents and receive the visa by mail. Contact the consulate for more details. Find a directory of all Iranian consulates here.
